Delicate. Fiery. Magical.

Opal is believed to have originated in India where in Sanskrit it was called “upala”, a “precious stone.” The October birthstone’s dramatic play-of-color has inspired writers to compare it to fireworks, galaxies and volcanoes. Opals are divided into five main categories that include light, black, fire, boulder and water opals. Because opal has the colors of other gems, the Romans thought it was the most precious and powerful of all. Ancient Greeks thought opals bestowed the gift of prophesy and protection from disease. Europeans believed opal to be a symbol of purity, hope and truth. The fields of Australia are the most productive in the world for October’s birthstone.

Opal is a birthstone for the month of October.
