Spinel is an alternative birthstone option for the month of August. The name “spinel” comes from the Latin word “spina”, which means thorn, in reference to the shape of spinel crystals. Some of the most famous historical gemstones that were originally thought to be rubies, turned out to be spinel. They tend to be more reflective than rubies because of their different optical characteristics. Until recently, spinel was an under-appreciated gemstone. This gem is available in a variety of colors ranging from intense red, vibrant pink, orange, purple, violet, blue to bluish green.

Spinel is rated “excellent” for everyday wear. To clean, gently scrub with a soft toothbrush and a solution of mild dish soap and warm water.
